Canada pauses Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) intake — what sponsors need to know
Immediate update
On July 15, 2026, the Government of Canada announced a pause on accepting new applications to the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP). IRCC will not accept new “interest to sponsor” forms or invite potential sponsors to apply until further notice. IRCC will continue processing PGP applications already received and aims to approve 15,000 sponsorship files for permanent residence in 2026.
How the PGP has worked
The PGP opened in 2020. Because demand has exceeded available spots, IRCC has managed entries by drawing invitations at random from the pool of people who submitted interest forms in the 2020 intake. Invitations were issued each year from 2021 through 2025 to those who entered in 2020.
What the pause means
– No new interest-to-sponsor forms will be accepted while the pause is in effect.
– IRCC will not issue invitations to new sponsors during the pause.
– Existing PGP applications already filed will continue to be processed and are the focus of IRCC’s 2026 objective.
Who is affected
– Canadians, permanent residents and registered Indians who did not submit an interest form in 2020 and were planning to apply now.
– People expecting invitations in upcoming rounds — invitations are on hold.
– Parents and grandparents whose sponsors have not yet entered the system — their PGP pathway is paused.
– Sponsors and applicants with files already submitted — these remain in process.
Practical steps while intake is paused
– Watch official IRCC communications for any update on reopening or selection changes.
– If you already filed, track your application and respond promptly to any IRCC requests.
– Keep documents current and organized (proof of relationship, identity, and sponsor status) so you’re ready if intake reopens.
– Maintain sponsor eligibility requirements while you wait.
What the announcement does not say
– There is no timeline for how long the pause will last.
– The release does not announce changes to eligibility rules, income requirements, fees, or other family-class streams.
– Don’t assume procedural changes unless IRCC states them.
Bottom line
This is a pause in accepting new entries to the PGP, not a program closure. IRCC will focus on processing existing applications and aims to approve 15,000 files in 2026. Prospective sponsors should not submit interest forms while the pause is active and should monitor IRCC for official updates.
