Nova Scotia Nominee Program expands selection for workers with expiring work permits
What this announcement is and why it matters
Nova Scotia’s provincial nomination agency announced a one-time expansion of selections under the Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP) in a release published July 14, 2026. The initiative targets people living and working in Nova Scotia who hold work permits expiring in 2026 or earlier and who had an active Expression of Interest (EOI) in the NSNP online system by June 30, 2026. The province says it will issue invitations to apply (ITA) to qualifying candidates and will contact selected individuals directly.
Who is eligible
Candidates must meet the timing rule (living and working in Nova Scotia, a work permit expiring in 2026 or earlier, and an active EOI submitted on or before June 30, 2026) and at least one of the profile conditions below:
– Workers earning at least CAD 27/hour at the time of EOI submission.
– Workers earning at least CAD 20/hour in a TEER 0–2 Sales and Service occupation at the time of EOI submission.
– Graduates of a Nova Scotia postsecondary institution who are employed in any occupation.
– Workers living outside Halifax Regional Municipality who are employed in any occupation.
– Workers employed in TEER 0–4 occupations in these key sectors: Agriculture; Construction; Health and Social Services; Manufacturing; Natural Resources; Professional and Scientific Services; or Transportation.
Note: TEER levels (0–5) are part of Canada’s National Occupational Classification; TEER 0 denotes the highest-skilled occupations and TEER 5 the lowest.
Selection and processing
– Selection is limited to candidates with active EOIs by June 30, 2026 who meet the listed wage or occupation conditions.
– The province will contact selected candidates directly.
– Work permit expiry may be used as a secondary factor in deciding the processing order of selected applications.
– The initiative is one-time and is not intended to replace the priority occupations announced in April.
What applicants and employers should do now
– Confirm your EOI was active on or before June 30, 2026 and that employment/wage information recorded then is correct.
– Keep contact details current in your NSNP profile.
– Gather evidence to support wage and employment claims at the time of EOI submission (pay stubs, employment letters, job descriptions).
– Verify you meet the requirements of at least one NSNP stream.
– Be prepared to provide criminal record checks and medical exam results if invited.
– If invited, submit a complete provincial nomination application to NSNP, then apply to the federal government for permanent residence after receiving a provincial nomination.
Limits and uncertainties
The release does not specify quotas, processing timelines, or how many candidates will be selected. It also does not change the previously announced priority occupations. Treat this as an additional opportunity that requires accurate records and readiness rather than a guaranteed pathway.
If you believe you meet the published criteria—holding a work permit expiring in 2026 or earlier, having an active NSNP EOI on or before June 30, 2026, and meeting any of the wage, TEER, occupation, graduate, or location conditions—ensure your NSNP profile and contact details are accurate and that you retain proof of the employment circumstances recorded in your EOI. Selected candidates will be contacted directly by the province and must complete the NSNP nomination application and follow the federal PR application process. Remember that inadmissibility can arise from prior immigration violations, a criminal record, or costly medical conditions.
