Canadian passport rises to 7th in Henley Passport Index (July 2026): implications for travellers and applicants
The July 21, 2026 Henley Passport Index moved Canada from 8th to 7th place. Canadian passport holders now have visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 183 destinations; the United States ranks 10th with access to 180 destinations. Small changes in entry rules can shift rankings because the top tier is tightly clustered.
How Henley measures passport power
Henley & Partners uses IATA data (enhanced by Henley) to rank 199 passports against 227 destinations. Each passport’s score equals the number of places its holders can enter without obtaining a visa in advance—counting visa-free entry, visa on arrival, visitor permits, or electronic travel authorizations (eTA). Destinations that require a pre-travel visa or e-visa are not counted. The index is updated monthly.
What changed for Canada and the U.S.
Canada’s rise reflects incremental gains in destination access. Notably, Canadians have been allowed visa-free entry to China for stays up to 30 days since February 2026, which Henley cited in its July 21 release. Canada has been in Henley’s top 10 since the index began in 2006.
The U.S. has seen a longer decline in rank, falling from 1st in 2006 to 12th in October 2025 before returning to 10th in January 2026. Henley noted that U.S. citizens still generally require a visa to visit China—one factor affecting its score.

Who this affects
– Frequent travellers and tourists: fewer pre-trip visa hassles for many short visits.
– Business travellers and employers: reduced administrative burden for regional travel.
– Prospective citizens and permanent residents: passport mobility is a tangible benefit to weigh when pursuing citizenship.
– Families with mixed-nationality members: travel planning can be simpler when more visa-free options exist.
Practical impact for Canadian holders and applicants
– Existing passport holders: broader short-term travel freedom (183 destinations under Henley’s July 2026 index).
– Applicants: only Canadian citizens can obtain a Canadian passport. Most foreign nationals must first become permanent residents, meet the physical presence requirement of 1,095 days in the last five years, pass the citizenship test, attend a citizenship ceremony, and receive a citizenship certificate to apply for a passport. Some people with an unbroken line of descent to a Canadian citizen may obtain proof of citizenship and then a passport.
– Application channels: online, by mail, or in person at a passport office or Service Canada Centre.
– Processing-time safeguard: effective April 1, 2026, applicants are entitled to receive their passport within 30 business days or have the application fee waived.
Travel-planning reminders
– Always confirm an individual destination’s entry rules before booking—Henley’s index is a snapshot and does not replace official government guidance.
– Note the China policy: Canadians can enter visa-free for up to 30 days (effective February 2026); U.S. citizens generally still require a visa (per Henley’s July 21 report).
– For citizenship applicants, track physical presence days and plan for test and ceremony timing when scheduling travel.
Movements to watch
– New bilateral or multilateral visa agreements (for example, any further changes involving China).
– Policy shifts by countries that currently grant visa-free access—losing even one destination can change a passport’s rank.
– Monthly Henley updates reflecting incremental gains or losses.
